Gorilla Leaf Eating.

Species - Gorilla

Gorillas are the largest of the great apes and are found in only nine African countries. Traditionally they have been regarded as one species with three sub species, but some scientists have recently proposed that the differences between the eastern and western populations are sufficient to regard them as separate species, each with sub-species.

BUAV and FRAME call on the Government to permanently ban experiments on Great Apes

A joint statement has been issued by the BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) and FRAME (Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments) calling on the Government to make a ban on experiments on Great Apes permanent and legally binding in the UK.

New rules being introduced in Europe through EU Directive 2010/63 ban the use of Great Apes in laboratories, but include a provision that individual member states can seek to use them if there is an unexpected outbreak of a life threatening human disease in the future.

Baby Mountain Gorilla from Virunga National Park rescued from poachers

Baby gorilla will join other orphans

August 2011. An infant mountain gorilla has been confiscated from poachers by Rwandan police in the town of Gisenyi on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Police arrested the Congolese poachers holding the infant as well as two Rwandans who were helping the poachers. The gorilla had been captured near the Bukima area of Virunga National Park, according to the poachers, indicating that it belongs to a critically endangered population. The poachers claimed they kept the gorilla for about six days, feeding him bananas and sugar cane until attempting to smuggle him to Rwanda.

Rwanda: Doctors Remove Snare From Baby Gorilla in Umubano Group

Jean Felix Kinani

2 July 2011

allAfrica.com

Zirikana is a 4-Year old infant male in Umubano group in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. Zirikana was reported to be caught in rope snare on his left leg.

Trackers were able to cut rope from tree where it was tied, allowing the infant to move freely, but the snare remained tight around his ankle.

Elisabeth, Rwanda Development Board (RBD) veterinary technician, went to check the infant that afternoon, and confirmed the presence of the rope snare on Zirikana's leg. As always, Gorilla Doctors consulted with the RDB's head veterinarian Tony Mudakwika, and the Chief Park Warden Prosper Uwingeli, along with Elisabeth and trackers. This resulted in the decision to attempt an intervention to remove the snare the following morning.
